How to Tie a Tie

The basics are always the hardest to master and, because of that, are the most crucial points of styling distinction. Perfect your suiting look with a sleek half-windsor knot. Here's how:

Step 1. Drape the tie around your neck with the wider end falling on the right. It should extend roughly 12 inches below the narrow end.

Step 2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end, pulling it behind so the tie's underside faces out.

Step 3. Lift the wide end up towards your face and bring it down through the loop. The wide end will twist around as its pulled through so the underside will be facing outward again.

Step 4. Bring the wide end of the tie around the front of your knot, pulling it from left to right.

Step 5. Bring the wide end up through the loop again. This time, the proper side will be facing up.

Step 6. Tuck the wide end through the knot in front.

Step 7. With both hands, tighten the knot by drawing it up towards your collar.

Step 8. A single dimple-- not a wrinkle or pleat-- is the sign of a finished and polished look for your tie knot.

Step 9. Slip on your blazer and, for a finishing touch, fold a pocket square into your breast pocket.
