Waterproof Your Makeup

Q: The rainy season is wreaking havoc on my makeup; I look like I’m melting by the time I reach the office even if I stay under the widest umbrella. Any tips on how I can make my makeup stay put in the rain?

Rain, rain go away so my makeup can last all day… Come springtime, even the lightest of drizzles and misting rains can slowly wash away your base and usually most noticeably your eye makeup. Runaway eyeliner, under eye mascara lines and streaky foundation is not exactly the fresh springtime look you were hoping for. To avoid this precipitation pitfall, there are a few, minor makeup changes you can make to keep everything in its place.

Use a primer. If you typically forgo a primer, consider adding it to your makeup routine for the spring. A primer (as the name suggests) gives your foundation a less oily, more balanced base before application and, in turn, your foundation will last longer. For the face, we love BECCA’s Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector. Eyeliner and shadow tends to get swiped away in rainy weather so consider using an eye primer like NARS’s Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base too.

Minimize your foundation. With warmer weather in general, you should scale back your foundation coverage which can look cake-y in the sun. The same adage applies to rainy weather: the less are wearing, the less there is for the rain to streak away. Swipe a little foundation under your eyes, around your nostrils and any other trouble spots while leaving as much of your skin as possible bare. If you feel most comfortable with full coverage, switch to a liquid foundation and use a setting powder to keep your foundation in place.

Use wax-based eye makeup. For the best waterproof formula, look for eye shadows that have a wax base like Makeup For Ever’s Aqua Cream Waterproof Cream Color eye shadow. The wax will wick away water so your eye color has that freshly-applied look all day long.

Swap your eyeliner pencil for a liquid liner. Compared to eyeliner pencils which are sensitive to water, a waterproof eyeliner pencil like Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is more adept at resisting water. For pencil devotees however you can secure your eye liner with a waterproof seal to up the longevity of your makeup. We love Trish McEvoy’s Finish Line Waterproof Eye Color Seal.

Finish with a setting spray. A good idea for long nights on the dance floor too, a setting spray like Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray will lock your makeup (foundation, blush, eye shadow and all) in place. Also, a setting spray will keep your makeup from pooling up in fine lines if you do get hit with the accidental splash of rain.
