Summer Suiting

Q: I really want to try the summer suit look this season. Any suggestions on how to keep it looking trendy and not nerdy?

A:  A totally modern masculine-feminine look, the summer suit is one of our favorite seasonal trends. Styling together a springy blazer and breezy shorts is always a little surprising, playfully flirty, and wholly polished. For all its sartorial splendor, however, the summer suit can be tricky to pull off without looking too matchy-matchy or overly covered for summer months.

There are two options to make this original look work for you: sport a blazer and short combination in the same print or style a blazer and short in complementary or tonal colors together.

For a totally matching ensemble, find a set in a unique print (think pajama-inspired geometric prints in silk or watercolor florals) and add one element of surprise like a contrasting colored shoe or a neon cuff. Adding this unexpected detail tones down the otherwise serious look of the blazer and instead plays into the summery print.

If you opt for a “matching-but-not-matching” suit, nix your staple black blazer and instead slip into an on-trend printed blazer with solid colored shorts. When selecting which color shorts to pair with your blazer, hone in on a color that is not the dominant or background color of the print. Focusing on the contrast color breaks up the stiff suiting look and still feels totally pulled together.

Regardless of which direction you choose, finish your look by layering a crisp white button up shirt underneath. The classic button up nods to the suit’s menswear origins and chicly balances prints or functions as a visual break in the suiting set.
