How to Layer for Cold Weather: Menswear Edition

At its most fundamental level, menswear style follows a specific a + b formula:

All this mumbo jumbo whittles down to, “Wear a button-up with maybe a sweater and, voilà, timeless style.” Although this basic formula is largely fixed, you can update your look with trendy variables to raise your style quotient to the umpteenth degree.

Vince Camuto stylist, Andrew Madrid, models some of our favorite menswear winter separates that all add up to one stone-cold awesome look.

Formula #1: Turtleneck + Quilted Vest + Trench Coat = Steve McQueen 2016

Style icon Steve McQueen owned the turtleneck-and-trench look. To update the King of Cool’s signature style, add a quilted vest—that extra layer puts a trendy twist on this classic pairing.

Formula #2: Henley + Puffer Vest + Motorcycle Jacket = Urban Woodsman

The looser silhouette of the motorcycle jacket makes it an ideal layering piece to cap off any look. A puffer vest is a remarkably sophisticated way to scale back on the “bad boy” vibe of the moto jacket, adding warmth but not bulk.

Formula #3: T-Shirt + Mock-neck Sweater + Varsity Jacket = All-Star Captain

Like history, style trends repeat themselves. Case in point: Spring’s fresh take on the varsity jacket. Unlike past iterations, it’s got a slimmer silhouette, infusing the sporty jacket with a subtle downtown edge. Layer your varsity jacket atop a mock-neck sweater and jogger pants for a winning look.
