Charles James: Beyond Fashion Exhibition Closes at The Metropolitan Museum of Art – Ends August 10th This year’s Costume Institute exhibit of 1940s and 1950s couturier Charles James will close on August 10th. The exhibition is an impressive collection of over 50 couture and ball gowns by James. Elaborately draped and impeccably tailored, James’s dresses were (and remain still) incredibly provocative as they skim along and embellish the feminine curves of the dress’s wearer. Fashion enthusiasts and techies alike will love the exhibit which digitally breaks down each dress’s construction in a state-of-the-art visual display.

The Giver Opens – August 14th Adapted from Lois Lowry’s children’s novel, The Giver stars Brenton Thwaites as Jonas and Jeff Bridges as the namesake character. Set in a seemingly utopian society, free of pain, strife and anguish, Jonas is destined to become the “Receiver of Memory,” the person who learns and keeps the memory of the past society. As Jonas learns more from the current Receiver of Memory, The Giver, he realizes the incomplete life his society leads and must decide whether or not to shield his community from these facets of life. MTV Video Music Awards – August 24th Coming back from Brooklyn, the MTV Video Music Awards have returned to southern California’s Fabulous Forum. This year’s performers are Usher, pop sensation Ariana Grande and Aussie pop punk band 5 Seconds of Summer. As for the nominees, Queen B Beyonce has raked in eight nominations including Video of the Year for “Drunk in Love.” For a full list of the nominees, visit here.

U.S. Open Tennis Championship – August 25th – September 8th Clean and starch your tennis whites, the U.S. Open Tennis Championship is coming into Queens, New York. Serena Williams is the two-time defending champion and aims to hold her title against French Open champion Maria Sharapova, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and her sister, two-time US Open champion Venus Williams. In the men’s division, all eyes are on the world’s number one champion Novak Djokovic and defending champion Rafael Nadal, the two leading male players in the tournament.

Electric Zoo Music Festival – August 29th – August 31st The Electric Zoo Music Festival returns to New York’s Randall’s Island for a three day electronic music extravaganza. Flying in the top international DJs, Electric Zoo is praised as one of the best electronic music festivals in the world.
