Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York 2014 – May 1st – May 31st Since 1998, The Red Bull Music Academy has stationed itself in different cities around the world and brings together a panel of the music industry elite for an intense two-week workshop. This year, Tokyo, Japan will play host to the Academy while New York City will get to enjoy the first annual Red Bull Music Academy Music Festival. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Opens – May 2nd, 2014 Real-life couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone reprise their roles as Peter Parker and love interest Gwen Stacy in the latest Spider-Man installment. Finally embracing his role as and the responsibilities of being a superhero, Spider-Man now must face off against a new crop of villains devised by the mysterious company Oscorp.

Cinco de Mayo – May 5th, 2014 Although it is often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day (which is actually celebrated in September), Cinco de Mayo marks Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Today, Cinco de Mayo has become a nationwide celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. New York City will host its annual Cinco de Mayo parade complete with colorful floats and traditional mariachi bands and dancers. For the parade route, visit here.

Costume Institute Gala Benefit – May 5th, 2014 Considered the Oscars of the fashion world, the Costume Institute Gala Benefit will celebrate the opening of this year’s exhibition, “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” The Costume Institute has also dedicated a new wing to the Met’s longtime supporter and Vogue’s influential editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The new Costume Center will be unveiled as a part of the Met Ball.

Today is the day to spend the day with your mom or the influential female figure in your life, thanking them for their love, support and guidance. Make this year extra special as it is the 100th anniversary of the Mother’s Day holiday.

Memorial Day – Monday, May 26th Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for the men and women who died while serving in the US military forces. This somber holiday has adopted a more positive overtone and now marks the first day of summer. The tradition of a Memorial Day BBQ has been traced back to the pre-Civil War tradition of having a potluck “dinner on the ground” at the graveyard of fallen soldiers.
