Looking Ahead: May 2016

NYC Vegetarian Food Festival, May 7-8

Whether you’re vegan or carnivore, come along to the sixth annual fest at the Metropolitan Pavilion to learn the health benefits of eating your greens as well as delicious food samples and chef demos. Taste test cold-pressured green smoothies from Green Mustache and the so-deliciously-rich-you’d-never-guess-they’re-healthy brownies made by Pure Genius. The festival benefits the animal rights society Mercy For Animals.

The Ultimate Wing Fest!, May 7

Bust out the Wet-Naps for all that finger-licking goodness! At Wing Fest (which sold out last year), you’ll enjoy an incredible variety of, you guessed it, chicken wings—from sweet chili-glazed to Cajun spicy to classic buffalo. Wash it all down and cool your taste buds with a craft beer or three. A $45 ticket gets you unlimited wings and suds, so pace yourself!

The Village Voice’s Brunch Eats, May 11

From 8-11pm, The Village Voice will host a breakfast-for-dinner celebration of everyone’s favorite weekend meal, with over 20 local restaurants serving up samples of their best known brunch dishes. Expect to feast on indulgently over-the-top donuts from Dough bakery and the Black Ant’s famed savory eggs and duck confit hash. And of course, what brunch would be complete without a spicy chipotle Bloody Mary from Butter & Scotch?

Discovery Day, May 15

Discovery Day celebrates the opening of Staten Island’s Freshkills Park, the largest parkland development in New York in over 100 years. Attendees will be among the first to explore the 2,200-acre landfill-to-park grounds, which includes eight miles of trails and 700 acres of meadowlands and wetland ponds. Once completed, Freshkills will be nearly three times the size of Central Park. So wheel out your bicycle and pack your picnic lunch to tour this epic historic spot!

BarkFest 2016, May 22

Put your pup on a leash and head to BarkFest, the world’s biggest festival for dogs and their owners—featuring celebridog appearances from Instagram stars Marnie and Tuna! The expo is sponsored by monthly doggie treat and toy subscription service, BarkBox, so you’ll be able to grab top-rated gnaw sticks and chew toys from BarkBox’s favorite local vendors. And check out the custom-built agility course, Shape Pup, that combines golf with a game of fetch (using tennis balls) to test your dog’s retrieval skills.
