5 Last-Minute New Year’s Eve Party Ideas

When it comes to New Year’s Eve, there are two types of people.

Type A have been planning their party-hopping strategy since this time last year. Type B have no clue and are, most likely, resigned to bunkering down to watch the ball drop on TV. So lame.

If you’re currently in the B group, don’t worry! We have five easy NYE party themes to quickly pull the big night together. Invite your fellow last-minute merrymakers and save everyone from a snooze-fest of a New Year celebration!

Detox Over Retox

Instead of rising on January 1 with a throbbing head, greet 2016 with a fresh face by swapping bar crawls with a NYE beauty session. While everyone else slings back one too many, treat your girls to a night in—complete with at-home spa treatments. Sip cucumber water, lounge in terrycloth robes or PJs, and mix up these simple and natural facials, all made with ingredients from your pantry.

Champagne Cocktail Tasting Party

What New Year’s bash would be complete without popping champagne? Rather than saving it to toast the stroke of midnight, make bubbly the focus of your festivities. Mix up champagne-based cocktails, like this one from Food & Style. Serve up small bites that pair well with a brut, such as sushi, deviled eggs and burrata crostini.

A Moveable Feast

Partner up with at least two other neighborhood friends and organize a progressive dinner. Each household will be responsible for serving up a course: appetizer, main dish or dessert. On the hour, travel to the next destination and party-hop your way to the big countdown. If your friends are not within walking distance but plan on drinking, hire a driver so all attendees can imbibe and travel safely.

Casino Night

Break out the poker chips and decks of cards! For inspiration, borrow from the glamorous gambling world of James Bond in the original 1967 Casino Royale. For added dazzle, ask guests to dress up in cocktail attire (or black-tie if you’re aiming for 007-style accuracy). Serve your high rollers with olives and martinis—shaken, not stirred.

Flash-Forward Fete

If the idea of staying up until midnight already has you yawning, make the ball-drop a few hours early by celebrating in a more convenient time zone. (Don’t worry, no actual travel is needed.) Pick a country, like Brazil (which is three hours ahead of EST) and ring in midnight by their watch (9pm your time). Serve local food favorites and cocktails to get people in the spirit. And to complete the effect, dress up your house with regionally relevant decorations, like feathered masquerade masks to really give it that Brazilian Carnival feel. Then call it an early night.
