Looking Ahead: June 2015

June is all about food! Whether you're a fan of BBQ or boozey brunches, there is something for you. Here are the food festivals and parades we're most excited for this month.

Caffeine Crawl ChicagoJune 4-5 If you regularly mutter, “Not until I’ve had my coffee…” this event will perk you up: the Caffeine Crawl Chicago. Tour over 25 different coffee shops and roasters to meet with fellow coffee connoisseurs and espresso enthusiasts. Cafes will offer special pour-over brews, give roasting demonstrations and serve up pastries to pair perfectly with your cup of joe. Chicago will play host to this particular crawl but other cities—from St. Louis to Sacramento—participate in this annual event. To find a Caffeine Crawl near you, visit their website here.

Big Apple Barbecue Block PartyJune 13-14 Madison Square Park becomes New York City’s backyard during the 13th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party. Nationwide pit masters will be serving up heaping plates of regional specialties like the tangy, spice-rubbed pulled pork of the Carolinas and wet ribs, sticky with BBQ sauce, from Tennessee. Southern bluegrass and country bands will perform throughout the festival to complete this homespun tableau. Admission and mouth-watering smells are free but upgrade to VIP status here.

Jazz Age Lawn PartyJune 13-14 Shimmy into your drop-waist dress, grab your straw boater hat and time hop to the roaring 20s at the Jazz Age Lawn Party. This weekend, Governor’s Island will be overrun with frisky flappers and mustachioed dandies learning the Charleston and posing for vintage portraits. Pack your own picnic lunch but the lawn party will supply plenty of St-Germain cocktails and martinis—fortunately for present-day attendees, Prohibition is a thing of the past.

Cheesemonger InvitationalJune 27 This isn’t your mom’s cheese-and-crackers night. Fifty-three cheese makers vie for the title of Champion Cheesemonger at the Cheesemonger Invitational. These Brie, Gouda, and Manchego experts will serve up cheesy crudities of their finest curds for your palate’s pleasure. But flavor alone is not enough for a competitor to win the coveted title. These cheese pros will also be scored on their dairy proficiency: a written test and a blind taste of six cheeses.

Pride SundayJune 28 Since its inception in 1970, the Pride March has been a crucial civil rights demonstration. Political activists organized the first march in retaliation to the violence and rioting outside of the Stonewall Inn, a popular New York City gay bar. Today, the march is a celebration of the great strides of the LGBT community. Join the festivities and line the streets of Fifth Avenue to marvel at over 55 passing floats.
