Meet Kate Blue from For the Love of Fancy

Younger generations will never know the struggle.

In summer, Instagram launched its long awaited (and desperately needed) Portrait mode so now #OOTD posters are no longer forced to choose: Do I cut off my head or my feet?

But even with this new tech development, there remains a group of square-crop diehards—including blogger Kate Blue from For the Love of Fancy. Blue has no qualms about clipping off her head and has made the “stick-your-arm-out-and-snap” selfie her trademark. Need proof? Check out Blue’s Instagram feed where every third picture is shot from near overhead.

Blue’s readers benefit the most from her loyalty to the square crop: her outfits remain front and center. From this bird’s eye POV, her followers can immediately zero in on the finer points of her painstakingly styled looks: a bejeweled bib necklace, an expertly untucked blouse and colorful pointed-toe pump (perfectly matched to her plaid scarf, of course).

We caught up with Blue to hear more about her style icons and how she launched For the Love of Fancy.

When did you start your blog?

I began my blog around February last year. My major is in fashion and I’ve been interested in it since the day I could say the word “fashion.” My husband convinced me to start my blog. He thought it would be a great hobby. I’ve always had a love for flair and fancy style, so the name For the Love of Fancy was born from that!

How would you describe your personal style?

Classic and feminine.

Who are your style icons?

Olivia Palermo and blogger Blair Eadie. They both do classic, chic and sophisticated unlike anyone else. I definitely get style inspiration from them. I try to invest in a few tried-and-true pieces, like a good blazer or perfect heel, which can be paired with multiple outfits.

Do you have a real-life style icon?

Growing up and to this day, my mom has great style and always had a knack for looking perfectly put-together. Whether it was at church or a trip to the grocery store, she always managed to look effortlessly chic.

What item in your closet will you never throw away?

I have several pairs of shoes that I will probably never part with. Also, one special little black dress. Though I’ve had many over the years, I still have one from three years ago and it’s very sophisticated and classic. It’s sticking with me as long as I can fit into it!

Fast and Furious Fashion QuizStyle advice to your 18-year-old self?

Be true to yourself and your style! Trends come and go, but you know what you like, so don’t be afraid to stick with what works—but also don’t be scared to add a little flair!

Last song you sang in the shower?

Taylor Swift’s entire 1989 album!

Last time you laughed until you cried?

Last night! My husband is by far the funniest person I’ve ever met. It’s like I’m at a lifelong comedy show!

Do you have a party trick/secret talent?

Kind of dorky, but I’m really good at mental math. Really good! Throw any numbers at me and I can spit out an answer in a few seconds! 249 x 1991? Got it.

Favorite cocktail?

Vodka tonic or recently, a Moscow Mule!

Favorite hostess gift?

We always like to bring a bottle of the hosts’ favorite wine when we attend a get-together, but on top of that, we found these really cute little wine gift bags. They are made of burlap and have bamboo handles, with the cutest little sayings on them like, “Great friends, good wine, and a good time” or “There’s always time for a little wine.”

Why did you choose the Vince Camuto Raylan Bootie

Talk about classic! The hint of suede is the perfect touch. And anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a sucker for a pointy toe. These booties will go with so much in my wardrobe, from my go-to dark skinny jeans to a faux-leather mini skirt with tights, to a chic sweater dress and leather jacket combo. They’re so versatile and a perfect addition to any outfit this fall. The possibilities are endless!
