Meet Melissa Rodriguez of MelRod Style

“This is David. He’s in finance.”

“Here’s Erika. She works at IBM.”

“Meet Francie. She’s a dental hygienist slash hip-hop DJ.”

Didn’t see that job title coming…

“Slasher” careers (i.e. real-estate broker slash mixologist or researcher slash Pilates instructor) are a new identity marker for Millennials. Slasher titles often derive from a pays-the-bills job supplemented with a beloved hobby or creative outlet that has grown into a side business.

One such “slasher” is California-based Melissa Rodriguez: style blogger slash DIY maven slash entrepreneur slash bride-to-be. (Okay, we admit “bride-to-be” isn’t technically a career, but given the time she’s dedicated to wedding planning, you could easily argue it’s turned into a full-time job.)

Rodriguez’s blog, MelRod Style, acts as a sort of central hub for her various professional pursuits. She posts snaps of her bohemian and laissez-faire California style—tribal-patterned maxi dresses, well-worn boyfriend jeans, palm-print jumpsuits—while simultaneously sharing her “Mel Made” tutorials on how to DIY an embellished collar or bleach-splashed jeans.

In addition to MelRod Style, Rodriguez is the co-founder of The Wear To Go Girls, a running Tumblr list of her favorite places to shop, dine out and socialize, created with fellow blogger Jamie Walsh of Glam Latte.

Most recently, Rodriguez has invited MelRod Style readers along as she plans her wedding, sharing gown inspiration, bridesmaid-dress roundups and lists of Big Day essentials on her wedding Pinterest board.

We caught up with the blogger slash entrepreneur to learn more about her everyday personal look—and bridal style—and the different ways she unwinds after a day of work slash wedding-planning.

Why did you start your blog?

I started my blog in 2010 as a creative outlet for me to express my personal style and love of DIY. Describe your personal style. My style is diverse. I’m a T-shirt and jeans kind of girl but occasionally love to dress up. It really depends on my mood. My style icon would have to be Nicole Richie. She’s my spirit animal. What is the best style advice you’ve ever received? It would be from my mother: Wear what you like and like what you wear. Be happy. Describe your wedding look. I’m in love with the vintage/garden style. There’s something so romantic and beautiful about it, and it’s how I picture my wedding - filled with nothing but love, surrounded by our loved ones.

What has been your favorite part of wedding planning thus far?

Dress shopping has definitely been my favorite part. It has been a very fun and memorable experience to share this with my mother and sisters.

What are your top three tips for brides-to-be?

My top three tips are: Plan early, do not stress, and enjoy the ride.

What are you reading right now?

Unfortunately, I am not reading anything at the moment. However, I am a bookworm and want to read The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.

What is on your playlist? Can you share on Spotify?

I’ve got Sia’s entire album [1000 Forms of Fear] currently playing on repeat, as well asCan’t Feel My Face by The Weeknd.

What summer beverage or cocktail cools you off?

Moscow Mules are my jam. Perfect for beating the heat.

Why did you choose this Vince Camuto High-Low Floral Dress?

I chose this beautiful dress because of its style. I always gravitate toward flowy and simple dresses that can take me from day to night. From running errands to brunch, even to a wedding, this dress can be styled countless ways. I styled mine with a white chunky sandal heel to bring out the white in the dress and topped it off with a statement necklace. This dress will definitely get a lot of love this summer.
