Like Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, FLOTUS Michelle Obama and barrister Amal Clooney, Dr. Shaheen Khan is proof positive that a career needn’t dictate your style choices.
Shaheen—who bears an uncanny resemblance to Mrs. Clooney—is a dentist 9-to-5 and a style blogger 5-to-9, sporting chic off-duty looks that belie her profession. The Chicago newcomer (she recently relocated from Louisville, Kentucky) helms Lows to Luxe, a fashion blog where you’ll see nary a pair of Crocs nor campy cartoon-print scrubs.
Khan’s signature style mixes timeless silhouettes and elevated basics in colors and fabrics that stand out: a poppy red shift dress, a nubby color-blocked cardigan, a textured, boiled-wool overcoat. Choice accessories—a chain-bib necklace, sapphire-toned high-heeled smoking slippers, an oversize envelope clutch—keep the looks fresh and sophisticated.
In addition to her street-style posts, Khan frequently shares local sales round-ups. True to her blog name, she mixes low and luxe goods she finds on sale. Her trick? Investing in high-quality handbags and footwear, balancing her budget with more affordable basics.
Clearly, this shopping maven knows her way around a sale. On navigating the crowded discount racks, she advises to stay focused. “It all adds up, so stick to what you came for and get out before you do more damage,” she says.
We caught up with Khan to discuss her favorite Chicago stomping grounds, top styling tips and the thrill of scouring a sales rack.
Why did you decide to start your blog, and what’s the story behind its name?
I started Lows to Luxe in 2013 as a way to share my love of fashion, and mixing budget and designer pieces. Although I love a great investment handbag, my daily wardrobe is not designer—I love a good sale find! I don’t think you need expensive things to have great style. I hope my blog inspires people to feel confident and enjoy finding their own style!
What influences your style?
I suppose everything influences me in a way. From the runways to my mother and, most importantly, my own imagination.
Do you have any style icons?
Miroslava Duma is one my favorite style mavens. She is fearless and has no rules to her fashion. I try to remember that when I style my own looks!
What are your favorite pieces this season?
I’m crushing heavy on culottes and pastel pieces this season.
What is the best style advice you’ve ever received?
Be you. Although something you like may not be trendy or what everyone else is wearing, be confident in your style choices and enjoy fashion!
What are your top five styling and grooming tips?
Be confident. Try new things. Brow powder will change your life. You can never be overdressed. Always be comfortable.
What are you reading right now?
The Glass Castle (for the second time!) by Jeannette Walls, because it’s that good.
What inspired the move to Chicago?
I moved right after graduating from dental school to complete a residency. I have always loved this city and having my brother and sister-in-law here made the move that much more exciting.
How does living in Chicago influence your style choices?
Weather is a huge factor here, and if your outfit can’t handle the wind, it won’t work. Luckily the city is filled with an amalgam of people and there is such a variety of styles. It’s so freeing to wear what you want and to be embraced for it!
What is your favorite local restaurant?
Oh, that’s a tough one since my husband and I love to try new foods! It would probably be Au Cheval—they have the best burger and fries ever!
Since you moved to Chicago, do you miss anything specifically about Kentucky?
The slower pace. Louisville is a beautiful city with so much to offer, and whenever I go home it’s nice to relax a bit.

Why did you choose the Vince Camuto Sleeveless Broken Photo Floral Shift Dress?
This graphic-print dress was an easy choice for me! The sheath silhouette is easy to wear day to night and the print is so fun and unique. I thought it would be great to dress up with heels or down with a cute pair of flats. It’s perfect for summer but will be easy to layer once it gets colder. I am always drawn to unique pieces and prints, and this couldn't have been more perfect!
