The average military family moves once every three years. To compare, the average civilian family moves once every six years.
Loading up the U-Haul. Wrapping picture frames in bubble wrap. Unpacking the kitchen plates. This modern nomadic culture can leave even the most grounded and tightly knit families feeling detached from their perpetually new surroundings.
When Army wife Kristyn Kilcullen moved from Tucson, Arizona to Germany with her husband and then-infant daughter, she acclimated to her new hometown by launching a personal blog, K Squared Glamour. Kristyn used her blog as a journal of sorts, cataloging her experience overseas. Through this outlet, Kristyn felt closer to her current (at least for the moment) neighborhood as she drew inspiration from the local culture and incorporated it into her blog.
Over time and across the miles, Kristyn started to include more personal style posts in her blog and re-launched under the name Glamour-Zine. Today, Glamour-Zine continues to be a diary of Kristyn’s outfits, set against the eight different homesteads she has lived in over six years.
Tapping into the local flavors and preferences ties Kristyn closer to her current address and has positively influenced her personal style. Currently, Kristyn and her family live in Texas; so, Kristyn has tapped into the Lone Star State’s Wild West origins with an array of chambray button-ups and worn-in denim jackets. Meanwhile, fluorescent green pumps, palm printed bombers, and lady-like full skirts are a cheerful nod to the state’s southern charm and brilliant weather.
We spoke with Kristyn to learn more about military life, and her daughter who has already started following in Mommy’s high-heeled footsteps.
Who are your style icons?
I absolutely adore and closely follow Blake Lively, Olivia Palermo, Lauren Conrad and, most recently, Kendall Jenner’s style. I also follow several other fashion bloggers such as Pink Peonies, Gal Meets Glam, Viva Luxury and Stylish Petite—just a few names that come to mind. They all have very different styles that I love. Basically, I look for areas of influence: fads, trends, or maybe just an idea that will enable me to create a fashion layout that turns into an outfit that I can call my own and share with my friends, family and/or viewers.
With your husband in the Army, your family moves often. Do the different addresses influence your style choices?
Home is where the Army sends us! Yes, the military life is often demanding and cumbersome; however, it has only brought us closer as a family. Each location brings about a new culture and environment that inspires fresh designs and fashion layouts. I make it a point to scour the town to find ways to intertwine a piece of the local culture into my blog. We make the best of what we have, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but fashion reigns from the heart of creativity and the courage to try something new!
Has your daughter adopted your love of fashion?
My daughter is turning 7 on the 21st of April and she most certainly has adopted my love for fashion. Believe it or not, she creates her own looks, layouts, and style by searching the web, playing dress up, and borrowing things from my closet. It’s truly inspiring! She is most recently obsessed with my wedge tennis shoes from one of last year’s trends. I keep telling her they are way too big for her but she tries to wear them out of the house anyways! It’s too cute!
What are you reading right now?
Don’t we all read People Style Watch, Elle, and other magazines?! The latest two audiobooks I have downloaded and have been listening to are Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and It’s All Small Stuff by Richard Carlson, an oldie but a goodie, and The Healing Code by Alexander Lloyd. I don’t have as much time as I would like to sit down and read, so, instead, I have the Audible app to listen to books. Aside from that, I do read a ton of blogs and magazines to stay up to date with fashion trends and beauty icons.
What is on your playlist?
Ahh, you will probably think I live under a rock (haha!), but I don’t have a playlist or Spotify. Though I can say I love country music (born and raised a cowgirl) and Christian rock, which is my most-played Pandora station. My daughter has taken over my actual playlist on Pandora. She loves music and, more often than not, has my phone. Oh and I have really been enjoying “TheSamTsui” music channel on YouTube.
What advice can you share with other aspiring bloggers?
The biggest piece of advice I can share with you is to be yourself, be patient and consistent. Unfortunately, this does not happen overnight. It takes much needed diligence and patience to carry you through your success and failures.

Why did you chose the Vince Camuto Norida pump?
I chose the Vince Camuto Norida Pump in white because I find a white pointed toe pump to be a spring and summer staple. Just like a nude heel, I can pair it with everything knowing it will look great, which takes the guesswork out of pairing if ever I am in a hurry. It looks glam both day and night. I have already worn them with several dresses, skirts, and pairs of jeans, and plan to wear them all season long!
