Meet Style Blogger Melanee Shale

An all too familiar scenario: You instantly fall in love with a blogger’s street style post. You could totally rock that open knit sweater. Yes, you must have it for your own.

As you eagerly scroll to the post’s credits, debit card in hand, you collapse in shock at the cost. That holey sweater costs the equivalent of three months’ rent?!

You are not alone in feeling this crushing letdown.

After reading and loving blogs that flaunted the hautest, hippest and heftiest-priced It-bags and must-have booties, Melanee Shale decided to launch her own blog. Not with the hopes of being gifted said hot-ticket items, but with the goal of inspiring readers to choose and put together affordable, accessible looks.

Three years later, Melanee’s self-titled blog realizes her objectives.

Forgoing lofty labels and their accompanying sky-high price tags, Melanee shops the same budget-friendly stores that you do. The difference? While you passed up that origami-pleated top, Melanee nabbed it. And, after she styled it with a pair of boyfriend jeans and over-sized cardigan, you’re now re-thinking your missed opportunity.

Melanee borrows street style from her hometown of Los Angeles, as well from New York City where she’s also lived. She’ll pair a fitted, Lower East Side-worthy moto-jacket with a colorful floral mini-dress. Or mix a laissez-faire, Silver Lake-esque billowy trench coat with tapered jeans and preppy brogues. Melanee’s blur of coastal trends gives you a completely refreshed perspective on your usual wardrobe choices.

We spoke with Melanee to learn more about her unique looks, how she shops on a budget—and manages to get so much style bang for her buck.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style will always depend on my mood. I don’t discriminate against any type of style but I will say I prefer realistic everyday wear. Denim, tees and boots are my favorite.

Who are your style icons?

My two favorites are Nicole Richie and Olivia Palermo! I lived in New York for almost eight years so I tend to have an edgy side that emulates Olivia. However, I’m a born and bred Los Angeleno so I can also dress on the boho side like Nicole.

What is the best style advice you’ve ever received?

Always wear something that fits your body type. So true!

What are your three best budget-saving tips when it comes to your wardrobe?

1. Mix and match old with new affordable trends.

2. Shop designer items only if they're on sale.

3. I buy basics like tees and tanks at Target.

Your hair game is always spot on. What products or tools do you use to style it?

So glad to hear this! I always think it’s crazy, haha! I like simple hair that’s easy to do in the mornings, so Paul Mitchell thickening spray then I either flat iron or curl the ends. That’s it!

What are you reading right now?

I’m reading a book called Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson. It was a movie made last year about a Navy Seal surviving a horrible ordeal in Afghanistan. Incredibly motivational!

What is on your playlist?

I literally have Taylor Swift, One Direction, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran on repeat. I can’t believe I just admitted to listening to One Direction!

Does living in Los Angeles influence your style choices?

Yes! The Los Angeles motto: “What doesn’t happen today, will happen tomorrow!” Everyone is so laid back and casual here that my style fits in perfectly. I run around all day so heels just aren’t practical.

What is your favorite local restaurant?

I have so many! I’m currently doing a Best Bánh Mì of LA tour with one of my blogger girlfriends. I love to eat and try new places! But if I had to pick one, I’d say Terroni’s on Beverly Blvd. The best Gnocchi pasta ever!
