Meet Kate Mclean of O My Heart!

Hailing from Fredericton in New Brunswick, Canada, where the winter temperatures average a low of 6 degrees Fahrenheit, Kate Mclean of O My Heart! knows a thing or two about cold-weather dressing.

While some fashion devotees may choose to ignore the plunging temperatures, convincing themselves tights are not necessary, Kate yields to the frigid air without compromising her style. Over-the-knee boots, chunky scarves and jackets too cute to leave at coat check are regulars in Kate’s style rotation. And, instead of stowing away her mini-skirts and shift dresses, Kate stocks up on fleece lined tights to brave the elements. Kate’s overall style is classic and feminine—full skirts and floral prints make frequent appearances in Kate’s outfits. She manages, however, to always squeeze in something unexpected: a flash of leopard print, a heel with an Aztec pattern, or a vintage Art Deco bracelet.

We caught up with Kate to discuss her style icon, the musical origins of her blog’s name and why accessories are so important to her look.

When did you start your blog?

I started my blog in March 2010. After reading personal style blogs for a year or two, I thought it would be a lot of fun to start my own. I did so very nervously at first and didn't tell anyone, but eventually word got out! The name comes from a song/album by Mother Mother.

Does living in New Brunswick/Canada influence your style choices?

Yes, big time! Living in Atlantic Canada, weather plays a huge part in how I dress, especially as I get older—practicality and warmth win out in the end. This impacts footwear a lot and I'm almost always found in flat boots during the winter months.

Who are your style icons?

My style icon is Olivia Palermo. She always looks so well put together, and even her most casual looks are perfection.

What are your top five styling and grooming tips? I'm not sure I have any set-in-stone rules or tips, but I know I always feel best when my nails are freshly painted and I'm wearing a good concealer and blush. I also think that a quality bag and shoes can pull together even the most inexpensive of outfits!

What is your favorite local restaurant?

My favorite local restaurant would probably be The Palate for a great lunch date or fancy dinner or The Snooty Fox for the best nachos in town.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Wine is usually my drink of choice!

Red! Nothing beats a red lip!

I love both!

Why did you choose the Vince Camuto Riley Tote?

It's such a great every day bag! It's big enough to hold everything and I love the texture of the bag with the gorgeous gold hardware. This is the type of bag that's perfectly appropriate for both the office and weekends—it’s polished but also relaxed! I love it.
