Shelby Skaggs has a talent for fearlessly mixing and matching prints. The Glitter & Gingham style blogger is immediately recognizable for her feminine layered accessories and perfectly stacked jewelry. But in addition to the coolest rings, most artfully torn jeans and chic-est chunky watches, Shelby accents every look with a warm smile.
Shelby’s friendly grin is as much her signature as the blogger’s self-described “juxtaposed” personal style. Her affable and open smile speak volumes about Shelby’s approach to fashion, blogging and her relationship with blog followers: While dressing is creative, glam and girly, Shelby’s smile assures you fashion should always be fun.
To learn more about the girl behind the grin, we caught up with Shelby to chat about daytime sequins, Kentucky cuisine and the blogger’s evolving style.
When did you start your blog—and why?
Glitter & Gingham came about in 2012. I was living in Georgia for graduate school, and in between learning about present value and management strategies, I was scouring Pinterest and hundreds of other blogs. Thanks to grad school, I was in major need of a creative outlet and blogging seemed like something I could dive right into. And that’s exactly what I did—albeit blindly, mind you. I have always had an intense love for clothes and fashion and blogging seemed to find a way to make that a hobby. Who would have thought?
When I was in the process of beginning my blog, finding a title was one of the hardest things! I wanted the title to be descriptive of my style, which then I would have classified as classic and girly. Two years later I find my style adding more slightly edgy elements to my daily outfits. Maybe I can find another “G” word to tack onto the end of it!
What influences your style?
Through blogging, I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing women! They all have such killer style so they are constant sources of inspiration for me. Pinterest and magazines never disappoint either. I always find time to read Sincerely, Jules and Sequins & Stripes. Jules has a confidence that almost feels tangible, which is just so cool. Liz atSequins & Stripes channels an All-American girl feel and classic style that never falls short.
Who are your style icons?
Olivia Palermo, Jenna Lyons, and style blogger Julie Sarinana of Sincerely, Jules. Each lady embodies such confidence that almost seems tangible, which is just so cool. Olivia's chic and feminine touches, Jules' cool, laid back style. Jenna's funky, yet classic combos are three elements I find myself trying to add to my own looks.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
One way to my heart is through food, especially Mexican food or breakfast! So Wild Eggs' Mexico City Maria's Chilaquiles are hands-down my favorite thing on the menu—any time of day! My favorite lunch spot is Wallace Station. They make the BEST sandwiches, using their own fresh-baked bread and grilling them to perfection. I can't ever stop myself from ordering the Turkey Rachel. For dinner, atmosphere is as important as food. That’s why Grey Goose and Enoteca are my two faves! I always opt for the grilled wedge salad and fried egg pizza at Grey Goose. You read that right, a fried egg pizza: I'm talking spinach, bacon, mushroom and a fried egg smack dab in the middle. Enoteca is a tapas and wine bar. I love their stuffed mushrooms and the Brussels sprouts doused in Manchego cheese sauce. It doesn't get better than that!
What is on your playlist?
A variety of everything! Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Jason Aldean, Sam Hunt, Ed Sheeran, Rascal Flatts, Justin Timberlake, Chris Young, Sam Smith and John Mayer—just to name a few.
What is your best rule of thumb for wearing daytime sequins?
Juxtaposition. Sequins tend to have a dressier feel, so add a jean jacket or graphic tee for a more casual vibe.
Do you have any tips for stacking bangles and necklaces?
Variety is the spice of life. I am all about mixing textures and metals. Experiment until you find a combo that you love. My current obsession happens to be adding dainty gold cuffs to a stack with my black watch!

Why did you choose the Vince Camuto Wrap Top?
I loved the vibrant blue hue. Being from Kentucky and being an avid University of Kentucky (UK) fan, my eye is always drawn to shades of blue. While it might not be a true UK blue, it is close enough. I knew I would be able to get a lot of wear out of it, which is crucial when I am adding pieces to my wardrobe. I can't wait to layer a cozy open cardigan with distressed skinny jeans for a UK football game. It will also work at the office, all I need is a black blazer to top it off. I could seriously think of a hundred ways to wear it, which makes my life so much easier when getting dressed in the morning.
